Guatemala service lea…

I took a group of students on a service learning trip to the Mayan Highlands of Guatemala. I am a high school art teacher and the purpose of our trip was to bring arts education into the public schools in the smaller Mayan communities as well as help educate the students and the community about Mayan history and culture.
Our group worked with an organization in Guatemala called AMA (Highland Women’s Association). This organization helps to educate, train and empower the women of the Mayan Highland Communities of Guatemala through teaching traditional native fiber and crafts techniques that can support families and communities in a sustainable eco-friendly way.
AMA helps support the community through two other programs: reforestation and stove building. We were able to work with the reforestation group and experience the benefits of the stove building program in one of the communities we visited. AMA works directly with the women of the Mayan Community and develops service learning groups that can help support the continued education efforts in this region.
We had an incredible knowledge filled experience in Guatemala; my only regret is that I was not able to capture the memories for myself and my students, because my Sony camera would not keep a charge leaving me with no form of documentation of our work. We are planning another service learning trip back to Guatemala this summer and I would like a “Your Second Shot” chance at capturing those memories with the help of Canon.

Our first kiss

Denny and I met online while he was in Iraq and we sent letters, emails, and pictures back and forth for 5 months before we actually met. He came home April 5th 2004 and after he marched in and was released his mom and sisters urged him to kiss me. He did! and his Mom took a picture of it, our first kiss. What a special moment caught on film. The original is gone now and all I have is this copy that I printed out on an old printer. The blurry, black and white photo is framed and sits on his dresser reminding us of that special day. We’ve been married for 7+ years now and have two beautiful children.

Honduras in a Blur

I broke my own record on this trip! I went through, count them with me, one, two, three cameras on our vacation to Honduras. The first was a new camera, bought specifically for the purposes of this trip. I insisted on capturing the moment of our hike in the rain (ok, downpour). Bad idea. We then found a mall and purchased another camera and within a half day, I dropped it 2 feet while taking pictures around the island of Roatan and it never turned on again. Finally, I was left with just my phone to use which got a drink spilled on it somewhere around 3 am. By the fourth day of our vacation, we had to resort to using disposable cameras for the remainder of the trip. We purchased 4 cameras and snapped away during our amazing 18-line zip-line tour in the mountains above La Ceiba with an amazing view of the ocean. I was hearbroken when we developed the pictures and realized none of the pictures from the last four days of our trip were viable! They were grainy and dark and forget anything where we were moving. It was especially disappointing because it was our brothers first time out of the country and his first zip-line. I would do anything to be able to recapture the experience!

Underground paradise …

Our honeymoom in Riviera Maya, Mexico afforded us the amazing opportunity to enjoy an eco tour of the Mayan jungle! We enjoyed touring mayan ruins, kayaking, zip line, and kayaking. However, the most amazing part of our tour was descending into an underground cave and lake near Chimuch, Mexico. The site was UNBELIEVABLE with glowing greens and blues and a crystal clear bottomless lake that we swam im. Unfortunately, this amazing memory is just that — only a memory, as it was impossible to capture the beautiful environment due to the low light. It would be amazing to not only rememer this moment in pictures, but also be able to share this with our friends and family.

Hy husband and I got married in a rush while I was 6 mos pregnant with my daughter. We were concerned about my health and I needed insurance after I had Allie. We had planned on getting married, just not so soon. My father paid for the two of us to fly to Vegas to get married. It was just the two of us and the only part our family played in the big day was getting to see the pictures we brought back. The pictures were provided by the wedding chapel, and they turned out awful. I don’t know what we expected, they took them on a disposible camera. We would love a second shot at a beautiful wedding photo.

P.S. I’ve tried several times to attach the photo and I don’t know if it’s working or not. Please email me if unable to see photo.

At the end of a long, hot day, I saw the opportunity for an interesting image. I wanted the typical image of a my son walking up a hill in silouhette with the red rock in the background. . As I was trying to determine the best exposure, he saw what I was doing and struck this pose. We all started laughing so hard I never took the picture I wanted. I was a good way to end the day. On our hike to overnight at Sperry Chalet, we had to cross a small snow bridge that offered alot of opportunity for an interesting image. The skies were looming and we were apporoaching the continental divide. We wanted to get to the shelter of a hikers\\\’ cabin so we weren\\\’t caught in the open during the storm. So I didn\\\’t spend the time need edto get this shot right. Every time i see this image I regret it. Especially since the shelter indicated on the make had been blown apart what looked likes years ago offering little shelter. I\\\’ve always said Ray Charles could take good photos in Glacier.
